Job Interview

Green blue yellow red pink, sad sassy sexy bored rude. One of very few sound pieces with dialogue and a moving image piece performing as multiple characters, 'Job Interview' (2019) was the first digital based artwork I understood as complete.
I invited some girls on my course to sit with me and chat about experiencing the male gaze whilst working in hospitality. We had briefly touched on the subject whilst on a course trip in Berlin. There was a mutual understanding between the 5 of us that working as a waitress had grim aspects. I wanted to tap into this, that it didn't surprise me how we each related but the shock came from the details within each experience. For the sake of creating work dedicated to this, we had the conversation again in Nottingham and recorded it.
I constructed a sound piece out of these experiences, originally sandwiched between sounds of cutlery interacting with a plate and exhibited it first with a still image of myself on a MacBook. Since that, I had told my then tutor I was going to drop out of university. She advised me to stick with it and try to explore the digital medium a bit more. As a result I created another version of this audio-visual piece, known today as Job Interview.
The film piece presents 5 characters interacting with the lens, each with a different attitude. I was thinking of the various reactions to the male gaze: discomfort, flattery, annoyance, fear. Furthermore, in creating multiple characters I wanted to consider the vast reach of the male gaze, even within one category of the service industry.
