The Artificial Influence

'The Artificial Influence (1)' still
Moving image visual, June 2021
An all-white interior decorated in cables, projections and a soundscape, 'The Artificial Influence' is my exaggerated depiction of social media, and our world consumed by the digital.
Outer-dimensional and uncanny, the installation intends to entice. Viewers were instructed to take off their shoes, initiating its sensory impact. The videos displayed were each one rolling piece of footage, reiterating smoothness and a sense of calm. Yet the soundscape acted as a warning to the underlying concept, reminiscent of possessed music boxes and moody electronica.

The figure and, ultimately, star of this installation is an embodiment of social media’s magnetism. White eyed, hairless and pink skinned, it is an unspecified yet vivid thing. Tapping on the screen it hides behind, it commands you to interact with it. It is trapped within its realm, yet its power cannot be mistaken. It needs our attention, and with it, can fool us.
In its various components, the space hinges on the intentions to both soothe and unnerve. There is comfort within sitting and playing on our phones in bed. But we are fed a sense of guilt whilst wrapped up in our duvet: everyone else is thriving and here I am.
'The Artificial Influence' was presented as my Final Piece at the NTU Degree Show 2021.
